HTC debuted the HTC U11 with squeezable edges and they called it ‘Edge Sense’. A similar feature will be a part of the Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL smartphones under the name of ‘Active Edge’. This was spotted by 9to5Google in the APK teardown of the Google App.
For months it was rumored that the Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL would feature squeezable edges similar to the HTC U11 smartphone. This Active Edge feature was spotted in a string of text which reads: ”To change settings for the squeeze gesture, go to your phone’s Active Edge settings.” This indicates that users will be able to trigger the Google Assistant by squeezing the frame of the phone.
In addition to active edge and it’s programmable squeezable frame, Google is also improving the Google Assistant. The Google Assistant would get a new feature called ‘Routines’ which would be quite similar to custom phrases that were introduced last year.
Google had introduced support for phrases for the Google Assistant. For example, saying Good Night would turn off all your lights and put the phone on silent etc. This will be taken one step forward with routines on the Google Assistant.
The squeezable Active Edge frame of the Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL smartphones would not just be able to do things from the home screen, but they can be programmed for app-specific tasks too. This update rolled out for the HTC U11 users recently and will be a part of the Pixel 2 smartphones from the start.
This means that Active Edge users would be able to set the squeezable edges to perform a specific task when a specific app is open. For example squeezing the phone while WhatsApp is open might automatically begin voice messages, or open camera while Instagram is open. Stay tuned with us for more updates on the gen-next Pixel 2 smartphones. The phones are all set to launch on the 4th of October.
